Bucherest, Romania and other stuff

For all of you who leave comments...THANK YOU. It is so nice to read them, I look forward to it everytime I am at a computer. Although, Joe knows I will become teary eyed everytime I read them. How am I going to survive in the Peace Corps in the middle of Africa, I am afraid I might not, less alone the next 2 months. I am looking forward to meeting up with our Kiwi friends in Barcelona and also with Joanna(Joes sister), just to have some comfort.

Secondly, I am no longer going to number the days b/c I am completely off and totally confused as all of our days are running together. When we go to buy our train tickets we always have to ask the teller what day of the week and date it is, so needless to say we have lost track.

I must say training into Bucharest I was a bit sketched(is that really a word) out. Joe and I described it as driving into Mexico. The houses were unrecognizible, no grass, just dirt, and everywhere is completely filthy with trash. Again, it is in a poor state b/c of the dicatorship control. I am really beginning to realize that Freedom is so precious. I think that in the US we really dont think about this at all, but in these cities just looking around is a daily reminder of what these people went through. Our hosts talked about the food rations, how elecricity was cut off for about two hours in the dead of winter each day to "conserve" energy, ummm...they explained that the TV was only on for about an hour a day and it was mostly all political shows, to convince the people that Dicator(Nicolae Ceausescu) was a good man....so interesting. Ceausescu was put to death in the Romanian Revolution of 1989, or murdered after a 3 day political trial. I love FREEDOM!!!!!
They had also explained how communism lowered the moral of the people, bc you did what ever you had to do to get what you needed, for instance you the grocery stores would not distribute the food equally, only if you had something to give them back...it was one man for himself to survive.

Our hosts are great, they have only been married for 5 months and are in their early thirties. We are so greatful to be staying with locals. It is enriching.

  1. I understand the homesickness. You will make it! Grass can always seem greener, though. I can't believe the wonderful adventures you are having. What great memories you are making to share with people the rest of your lives. And... hello? You don't know what day of the week it is??? THAT is the LIFE. I wake up on Tuesday wishing it was Wednesday; Wednesday wishing it was Thursday and on and on...Oh to have my days not matter!

  3. Cheellloo Wollersheims!

I loved your entry about Romania and Freedom. You are going to be so much more able to speak about the cost and value of freedom when you come back. I'm specifically thinking of when Joe runs for office! Hehe! And Ash, it makes me feel guilty for the fact that I went to the mall yesterday and spent way too much money on a dress and some underwear! But hey, I did got to TJ Maxx and got a cheap sweater! I thought of you! I miss you both tons!

    Keep posting pictures--they are great!

    Love,
    Jess

P.S. I was asked to be on Colbert Report. After much agonizing, I agreed to do it, but then they cancelled. They knew they couldn't mess with me! : )

    I am finally here...I am on the blog...and I am posting! :-)

Sounds like you guys are having the time of your lives! Live it up! Not knowing what day it is?....that is awesome!! I could only wonder....

Life is good in G-town....We are just beginning to count down the days until little Trinity arrives....we only have 10 weeks! that is crazy! 2 &1/2 months and we will be parents...that is even crazier! I am beginning to feel REALLY pregant! and really BIG! By the end of the day I am so tired...oh the fun is just beginning. :-)

Grandma and Grandpa visited us this weekend. We had a really good time with them. They flew in on Sat morning, stayed with us and flew out on Sunday evening. It was so nice of them to do that...we enjoyed it. We of course went from restaurant to restaurant and ate way too much....but hey isn't that what we Martin's do best?!! haha...

Every morning I wake up I wonder
"what are Joe and Ash doing?" "Where are they?"....it's crazy to think you are actually 1/2 way around the world.

Anyway...I miss you both.....I can't wait until you are home....:-)

    Love your big-bellied sis,
    Aubs (& Trinity) :-)
